Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was a Jesuit seminarian who died in Rome in 1591. He was only twenty-three years old when he died of the plague, which he caught after attending the sick in the city. Because he was just a seminarian, he is wearing cassock and surplice but he does not have a priestly stole. Therefore, he is the patron of young students and seminarians. We also see a crucifix in his hands. According the 1891 book The Life of St. Aloysius Gonzaga by Fr. J. O'Conor, SJ, Aloysius liked to gaze at the crucifix before even becoming a religious. But especially in the days close to his death, he never let go of the crucifix. In addition, Fr. O'Conor tells us that Aloysius liked to hear some of the writings of St. Bernard, our patron, and that Aloysius heard the Sermons on the Song of Songs from his deathbed. The final word from his mouth was the Holy Name of Jesus. Like him, let us adore the crucifix and respect the name of Jesus. St. Aloysius, pray for us!
